The Carmel Journals | The White Rabbit in Wonderland

“I’m late! I’m late, for a very important date!”

Have you ever followed the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole? Well, if you haven’t, you should, all the way to Carmel-by-the-Sea, down along Ocean Avenue till you find the Court of the Golden Bough. There you will follow him up the stairs of the pretty Tudor style building in the image below, until you find the White Rabbit. Essentially you have followed the White Rabbit to find the White Rabbit. It’s just one of those nonsensical things that Alice keeps finding in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. You can join Alice in her adventures when you enter the door to the whimsical, magical place that is the White Rabbit.

What awaits you at the White Rabbit is an incredible collection of Alice in Wonderland themed items: decor, backward clocks, pocket watches, tea sets, books, mugs and t-shirts, tiles, jewelry, cards, garden statuary, chess sets, costumes, hats and so much more. A lot of these items are hand made in studio right in Carmel by artists Dan Herron and Martin Basco. The shop is owned by the also creative Querida King, who, a few years ago, transformed the space from a whimsical children’s shop called Kids By The Sea, into the current, also very whimsical, White Rabbit.

You can spend quite some time browsing the White Rabbit, as there are so many treasures. Anything in particular caught your eye? I am partial to the backward clocks and will eventually get myself one when I settle into a place of my own again. And if you cannot make it to Carmel, you can order some of the items through their website.

Update of March 21 2023: Unfortunately The White Rabbit did not make it through the storm that was the c-pandemic and is now closed. I considered removing this post, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. I will let is stay as a testament and memory to the creativity and artistry of Querida King, Dan Herron, Martin Basco and other wonderful creators.
