A few months ago I introduced you to the exquisite beauty and quality of the English Shaker style kitchens by deVOL, and today I just have to share this one with you as well. This lovely kitchen is to be found in an Edwardian Villa in Cardiff, Wales, that has been renovated to look like it hasn’t been renovated, with everything put back the way it was, or might have been.
Though smaller, the feel of this kitchen is similar to the one in Hertfordshire, but what can I say: I am clearly drawn to these tones, cabinet style and airy, uncluttered feel. And I really love the copper railing running under the shelves as it can be used to hang a variety of useful things.

Like the Hertfordshire kitchen, this one is also a world onto itself, though it includes a dining area with also a little sofa and fireplace, which make the whole space feel very cozy. Off to the side there is also a scullery, and you get a glimpse of that in one of the images below. Now more of a butler’s pantry, a scullery used to be the place where dishes were washed, silver was polished and all such jobs taken care of separately from the main cooking area. And I must say that, having the space, I quite like the idea of a separate dish washing area. That way, if you have to, you can just pile things up in there while your party wraps up and just close the door until you are ready to deal with it.

Though clearly a space outfitted for modern living, this kitchen feels like it has always been there, and the space transition from scullery to kitchen to dining area is nostalgic of a bygone era and flows beautifully. The scullery tiles are quarry tiles by deVOL’s sister company Floors of Stone and look quite authentic. The doors and wood floor are reclaimed, though you would never know they weren’t original.
The free-standing island features a bespoke aged copper worktop, which you can get a sense of from the window reflection.

As mentioned in the previous post, after much loving preparations (which I religiously followed along in their Instagram stories) the new American outpost of deVOL Kitchens opened last month in New York. I am adding a few images here to give you a glimpse of the beautiful showroom, which is located in a mid-19th century building on Bond Street in the NoHo area of Manhattan’s East Village. Here you will find a good representation of all that deVOL has to offer, from the various kitchen styles, to handcrafted tiles and pottery, to carefully selected antiques, as well as stools and other furnishings; all in soft-spoken, non glitzy deVOL style, of course. I am now officially in love with the blue of the cupboards in the images above. Same Shaker style, different blue from the other two kitchens I have shown you. Can you see hearts coming out of my eyes? I also love the free standing cabinet in the image below left. All beautifully and lovingly crafted by hand, of course.
The problem with seeing this kind of things is that you can’t unsee them. Just like once the mind has been expanded by a new concept it can never un-expand, once you see this kind of quality you can never go back and be satisfied with less. At least, that’s true for me.
